Paper Players Blog Hop, Blog Candy and a new Challenge!

Hello and welcome to the Paper Players Blog Hop!  To get to the beginning of our blog hop please click HERE.  As well as our Blog Hop, our Challenge this week is "Anything Goes"!  At the end of my post is some Blog Candy!!

Today I am highlighting a new Bigz L Die called "Fun Flowers" (121812) from the current Stampin' Up Occasions Mini Catalogue.  This catalogue coincides with the Sale-A-Bration Sale on now at Stampin' Up!!!  As well as earning the regular hostess benefits, all Canadian customers can choose a FREE item out of the Sale-A-Bration Catalogue with every $60 order and Hostesses in Canada can earn an additional Sale-A-Bration FREEBIE with a $395 party!!

I love using my Big Shot (aka Mr. Big) and when I saw this floral die in the new mini catalogue from Stampin' Up, I knew I had to have it!  The best thing about the Big Shot and the Bigz dies is that they can cut through fabric, wood sheets, magnetic sheets, cardstock, aluminum, felt....and so on!

When Designing my card:
  • First I chose the colours!  I chose Blushing Bride and Soft Suede!
  • To create the flower, I cut a piece of the Presto Patterns Designer Paper and put it through the Big Shot with the new Fun Flowers Bigz L Die.
  • I sponged each flower with Blushing Bride and Soft Suede Inks, and accented the card with some Early Espresso Ribbon and a Crumb Cake Embosslit Butterfly
  • The circles were created with the Circle Scissors Plus...4" and 3.75" circles.
  • A TIP:  Use Dotto with your Circle Scissors Plus, it is a temporary adhesive that will keep your paper in place!
  • I used the Small Oval Punch for my sentiment from the Fabulous Phrases Stamp Set.

Friday Mashup Guest Designer ~ Colour Challenge

It is Sale-A-Bration time at Stampin' Up!!  From now until March, for every $60 you spend, you will earn a FREE item from the Sale-A-Bration Catalogue!!  I am excited and looking forward to getting some new goodies!!!  I have some "oldies" but still current goodies to share with you today!

Last week I was the Mashup Maven for the Friday Mashup Challenge Blog.  I love their challenges because they are fun and it is great that their top pick for the week gets to be a guest designer for the next week!  I was so happy when they chose my card!  So here I am with a pretty colour combo challenge that seemed romantic and soft to me!  Plus I LOVE River Rock so much and that made this challenge even better!

My card is made with Pumpkin Pie because I didn't have the Peach Parfait and I subbed in Pretty in Pink for Pink Pirouette.  For my "oldie but goodie" stamp set, I used the Always set that I seem to "always" forget about! I could have used it last week for the Bird Challenge at the Mashup!  It is such a pretty stamp set and I love colouring the heart with my markers and huffing the image...yes, I was huffing and puffing!

Once again I inked up the En Francais background stamp this time in River Rock.  I am happy with how my card turned out, it was not what I had in mind but it began to grow on me!

Come join us at the Friday Mashup!  I can't wait to see what you create with these pretty colours!
Thanks for stopping by!!

Create Ink and Paper Players

This is the first time I have played with Create Ink.  I have always wanted to play along with them and I really was intrigued by their colours this week!  I decided to use Ann's Sketch at the Paper Players.  I love the colours and decided to make some Pacific Point Butterflies...I know that is not a "real" colour for a butterfly, but I was happy with how it turned out!

Be sure to head on over to the Create Ink Colour Lab Challenge Blog and check them out!
Thanks for stopping by!  Sorry for the short post but I am pooped and off to bed!!

Pals Paper Arts Sketch Challenge

All week I have been waiting to create a card for the PPA Sketch Challenge.  I finally got the chance tonight and went to work.  I decided to rotate the sketch because I liked the long shaped box #4.  I also tried their tip to use Ribbon as one of my layers!

When breaking down a sketch I look at:
  1. What stamp would work with the main panel on the sketch?  Box #4 seemed like a focal point to me, so I was looking for a long or tall image.
  2. What kind of a card do I want to create with that image?  Birthday?  Sympathy? Wedding?
  3. Where and what would my sentiment be?
I am sure many stampers do the same thing!!  So I went to work, and found the image from the Crazy for Cupcakes stamp set which was the first set I bought as a Stampin' Up Demo.  I love it and have used it a lot!  Then I looked at the circles where the sentiment could go and decided to use my new Fabulous Phrases set.  This stamp set is perfect in Clear Mount because with an A sized Clear Block, I could fit the two words onto my punched circles perfectly.

I had some scraps of Rose Red Designer Paper on my desk and decided to pair it up with River Rock and White.  This card is very simple but I love these two colours together.  I know this card is not fancy or clever but I wanted it to be clean and pretty.  I used my crimper to add some texture to the bottom box #2 on the sketch.

Thanks for stopping by!  If you get the chance head on over to the Pals Paper Arts challenge blog to play with this terrific sketch!!

Smiles,
Lesley

PS  I created a new Watermark for myself!!  What do you think?

Paper Players 31 ~ A Sketch from Ann

This week at the Paper Players Challenge Blog we have a wonderful sketch by mega-talented stamper and DT member, Ann Schach!  She created a versatile sketch for us by which I was immediately inspired!

I made a total of 4 different cards for this sketch because I was SO inspired!  I just could not decide on what one to use but in the end, my cupcake punch won out and I made a Birthday Card using my Cupcake Punch and Wordplay Sentiment Stamp Set.  I used the pretty Valentine Paper from the Valentine Bundle that ends tomorrow.  Using my Stampin' Write Markers, I inked up the sentiment in Pretty in Pink and Real Red.

I hope you get the chance to play with the Paper Players this week and challenge yourself to try something new!  A sketch is always a great starting point!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Colour Q and the "AH HA" Moment

My New Year promise to myself, beside losing weight, was to play the Colour Q more often. No weight lost yet, so here I am making a card!  My inky fingers got a good workout today!  Does that count?

I am a fairly simple stamper and tend to use the same colours...blues, browns, neutrals...I often look at the Colour Q Colours and run in the opposite direction because I often don't know where to start!!  Then it hit me one day!  Why start from scratch?  Why not take a "Cue" from her inspiration photo?  There you have it.  The big "AH HA" moment!  I finally CLUED into what Colour Q meant!!  LOL!!!  I should take a CUE from those gorgeous photos used with the Q Challenges and go from there!!!  Just because I am a teacher doesn't mean I am the sharpest knife in the drawer!!!  Hehehe!

So I did it!  I took the CUE from the beautiful photo Arielle has given us to use this week:

I looked at the photo and thought:
  1. Eastern Blooms Stamp Set-It has similar flowers in it and I haven't used it in such a long time!  I needed to dust it off. (literally)
  2. Look at the circles...thin white circles layers with Cherry Cobbler Circles...I can do that with my Circle Scissors Plus.
  3. The Flower Stems...I can use my Little Leaves Die in the Big Shot in the Always Artichoke Colour.
  4. The So Saffron is in the middle of the flower, I can use my Itty Bitty Punches and punch out a couple flower centres and cover them with my Pearls.
And this is what I created with the Inspiration Photo as my guide...

I am happy with how it turned out.  I wish I had tried to get the flowers closer together but I liked the way they looked around the sentiment.  I also used my Sanded background stamp in Cherry Cobbler Ink on my Poppy Parade background.  I thought the circles needed some scallops and so used my Large Scallop Circle Die in the Big Shot too.

Thanks for stopping by and for reading through my long post.  It really was an "AH HA" moment for me today! LOL!  I would love to hear what you think of my card and I hope you get the chance to head over to Arielle's Colour Q Challenge Blog to try out this challenge for yourself!

Lesley

Friday Mashup Challenge #28-Vintage Birdy

Shirley over at the Friday Mashup Challenge has another great challenge for us this week!  She wants us to use birds on our project!  I can't tell you how much I wanted to use the new "Nature Walk" stamp set from the new Mini Catalogue but I don't own it yet!  I have been waiting for Sale-A-Bration to start as I am sure many of you have been too!!

I wanted to created something vintage and I was lacking MOJO!!  I went looking at some of the other awesome challenges out there to get inpsired and decided I would try the Sketch 124 from the Clean and Simple Blog and The Colour Throwdown Challenge-Blushing Bride, Pear Pizzazz and Crumb Cake (I add black and vanilla as a neutral accent).  I think I over did it with my Crumb Cake "distressing"!!

I hope you get the chance to play along with the Mashup Team this week!!!  Be sure to check out the Colour Throwdown and the Clean and Simple Sketch too!

I love reading your comments and hearing from you!  I can't wait to see what you create!

Thanks for stopping by!

Friday Mashup 27

This week at the Friday Mashup they have a Colour Challenge.  The colours are Not Quite Navy, Poppy Parade and Sahara Sand.  I soon realized I was out of Sahara Sand Paper and subbed in Crumb Cake.  I added a strip of the crocheted ribbon along the card for a bit of texture.

The flowers are from the new BigzL Die from the new SU! Mini Catalogue called "Fun Flowers".  I sponged each flower with Poppy Parade Ink and added some "umph" to the flower by putting dimensionals between each flower!!  The sentiment seems to be my favourite of late, from the "Afterthoughts" Level One Hostess Set which I love.  On the Not Quite Navy portion I have stamped the words from the "Charming" set.  All the pieces on this card are sponged with the same colour ink as the cardstock, so the card appears softer.

Go have a look at the Friday Mashup Challenge this week and play along!

The Paper Players Colour Challenge ~30~

This week at the Paper Players we have a beautiful Colour Combo created by Nance!!  She chose such pretty colours and I was swept away in the romance of the soft hues of River Rock, Baja Breeze, Rose Red and Very Vanilla.

This is the card I created, complete with Butterflies and sponged edges.  I sponged the edges with River Rock Ink and added some texture with my crimper on the front circle. I am in love with the sentiment from that Level One Hostess set called "Afterthoughts".  My butterflies are all decked out with Pearls and the background of my card is stamped with the En Francais Background Stamp.

Some things that I do when tackling a colour challenge:
  1. Playing with colour can be intimidating and overwhelming! I always take the Stampin' Write Markers in the colours from the challenge and lay them together on the table. I also pull out one sheet of each colour in cardstock and lay them on the table.  This helps me to see how the colours look together and gives me the idea of what stamps to use!
  2. Still not sure where to start?  Try focusing on the colour that appeals to you the most!  Then choose a stamp set that would work well with your favourite colour.  In this card, I really played up the Vanilla and Rose Red on my card.  The Rose Red is highlighted by the ribbon and the Butterflies from the Embosslit Butterflies Die for the Big Shot.
  3. Create a focal point by choosing a simple and clean layout and then let the colours do all the hard work for you!!!
I hope you give this wonderful colour scheme a try this week at the Paper Players Challenge Blog.  You can visit the blog and link up your creation by clicking HERE.

Thanks for stopping by!!!

Lesley

Pals Paper Arts Inspiration Challenge

This is my submission for the current Pals Paper Arts Inspiration Challenge.  The photo they provided was unusual and so called for an unusual card!!  This was really out of my comfort range and I thought, why not?  Notice the ribbon?  I was inspired by many card makers out there doing this technique.  My ribbon here is not as "graceful" as some of the ones I have seen but I am happy with the effect!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Stylish Blogger Award

This weekend I was off on a romantic getaway with my hubby.  He got the getaway for me for my birthday in August and I have been waiting patiently for this weekend to arrive!!  We went to a wonderful spot on the West Coast and had our own little cabin with a fireplace and soaker tub!!  I was in heaven!  Thank you sweetie for my special weekend away!!

On Saturday, right before we left, I saw that Ann Schach of The Stampin' Schach, had chosen me to receive a Stylish Blogger Award!!  Wow!  I was tickled pink!!  Me Stylish?  LOL!!!  Thank you Ann for thinking of me!!  The rules are I need to share 8 things about myself and then choose 8 more bloggers to receive this award!!!

So 8 things about me...yikes...here we go!!!

1.  I LOVE sushi!!  It is my favourite food and I often have sushi with my best friend Jake.  The best time out for us is sushi and a movie...yep, that is about as perfect as it gets!!

2.  I used to sing professionally on stage.  I have a degree in Acting and Directing as well as a Diploma in Musical Theatre.  Theatre was my main livelihood up until 2004 when I had to stop performing in my usual gig.  I would sing about 20 songs a night with 4 can-can dancers dancing all around!!  I loved that gig and even met my husband!!  He followed me home.

3.  I had Melanoma in my left leg.  I had three surgeries to deal with the cancer and it spread to my lymphnodes.  It was a scary time and it happened in 2004.  That sort of ended my performing career as I wasn't the "mover" on stage I once was after that.  The reason I share this is because so many people do not know how deadly melanoma is and my cancer was a small mole on my leg, the size of a pinhead.  I NEVER imagined that it could be cancer and could spread throughout my body.  I am happy I got the mole off and the doctors removed my lymphnodes from my left leg.  I have been cancer free for 6 years and try to be happy everyday!!  So get your moles checked and GET 'EM OFF!! Better off, than on!!

4.  I love to sketch layouts for my cards!  I have a sketch pad in my purse and beside the bed for when inspiration strikes!!

5.  My hubby and I were married on St. Patrick's Day!  It is an easy date to remember and we had a great party!!  We are both Irish and thought this would be a natural fit.  My grandparents on my mom's side were married on St. Patty's Day too!!  In England, during WWII.

6.  I have one sibling, who is a singer and a beautiful dancer.  She is almost 5 years younger than me.  Her name is Kelley and she is super-talented and lovely.

7.  My favourite season is Spring.  I love the birds, the sunshine, the frequent rain showers and the brightness.  I always feel so much better when Spring arrives.

8.  I love fishing.  My husband and I spend our summer holidays, fishing and camping.  We have a little boat and a truck/camper combo.  I love sitting by the lake, reading a good book or sketching a card design.  It is the best part of the summer.

Now I would like to pass this award onto some fabulous bloggers who have lovely blogs and who send me sweet comments and who inspire me with their work.  I noticed that my fellow Paper Players Nance, Ann, Anne-Marie and Jaydee have all received this award already!!!  Congrats girls!!!

Paper Players Theme Challenge-Happy Valentine's Day

The Paper Players Challenge is up and running for the New Year!  I hope everyone had a restful hoiliday break and had some wonderful time with family and friends.  Today's challenge and our first for the year is a theme!  We would like you to start making your Valentine cards!!  We also have a brand new Guest Designer, Julie Gearinger.  Welcome Julie!!  We are so happy to be crafting with you this month!

I decided to create a traditional card with a Red and Pink theme.  I used a new Flower die that is available in the New Occasions Mini Catalogue called "Fun Flowers".  I love it!!  I crimped the flowers with my paper crimper.  I also used the Designer Paper and a sentiment from the "Filled with Love Bundle" that is available until January 24th!  It is a terrific deal with 12 sheets of DSP, one cute stamp set and some clear bitty buttons.  The mini centre flower was created using one of the Itty Bitty Punches and a Pearl was placed in the middle.  I love that DSP!!  A little Pink Taffeta Ribbon was added for some more pink colour on the card!!

Thanks for stopping by!
Come by and visit the Paper Players Blog by clicking HERE.  And be sure to visit the fabulous blogs of the other Paper Players!!

Pals Paper Arts Colour Challenge

The Pals Paper Arts group has a fun colour challenge this week!  They want you to use Baja Breeze, Pear Pizzazz and Perfect Plum!  I didn't know how I was going to use these colours but I decided to give it a shot and see where the colours led me!  My card is simple, with two panels (2 1/8"x 4 3/4") and then I staggered the panels.  The Pear Pizzazz panel is a strip of the Presto Patterns Paper, inked with a sponge and some Pear Pizzazz Ink.

I made the flower using my Boho Blossoms Punch and scrunched up 3 of the biggest flowers and glue-dotted them together.  Then I fluffed out each flower, this making a Puffy Flower with a little pearl inside!!  I used the strip of Pearls that comes with the pearl package and made the stem for the flower.  The sentiment comes from an retired Hostess Set!  One of my favs!  And I sponged the edges of the Decorative Label Punch out.  I took my inspiration from the Skipping Stones Sketch Challenge this week.

Stamping 411 and Colour Dare

Wow!!  I was amazed to see that I reached 100 readers today! What a wonderful thing, to see that 100 today! I did a happy dance!  Thank you to everyone who comes to visit my blog.  I never knew about the reader program until a gal emailed me and asked if I had it hooked up to my blog!!  So thank you for challenging me to learn new stuff like that and for stopping by in your busy day to visit me!

As you know, one of my most favourite challenges is Stamping 411.  I love their sketches and this week they have a great one!  I changed one element of the sketch! Instead of the Modern Label Punch at the bottom left hand corner of the card, I used the Little Leaves die and made that my accent.  I also used the colours from the current Colour Dare.  I'll admit, it was tough but I am happy with how they turned out!!  Tempting Turquoise, Pear Pizzazz and Tangerine Tango.

I used the leaves as the main focal point of my card and added some little flowers with the Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack!  The sentiment is from Fabulous Phrases once again and I made my own tag!!!  Do you know how I did that?  I got this terrific idea from Brenda over at her blog QBee's Quest.  Click HERE to see her post!!  Such a clever idea!!!  She is calling it her 'Decorative Label Punch Mini Label".

I added some pearls to each little flower I punched out and I used some retired paper from the Sweet Pea DSP pack from last year.  I used the "de"-bossed side of the finial press embossed paper...I like how it looks!  I thought this would be a different kind of Valentine's card!!  We do Christmas cards in non-traditional colours, why not a Valentine Card?

Thanks for stopping by!!

Stamping Simply

Back to work means less stamping time!!  I wanted create something clean and simple for my stash of cards!!  This stamp set is new to me and I am in love with how pretty and delicate it is!  It is called "Growing Green" and is a nice set for making quick and easy cards!!

The cardstock is Naturals White and the matted piece is in Early Espresso.  The flower is stamped and handcut with my SU scissors!  Love them!!  Then I sponged the flower with Pretty in Pink and Regal Rose Ink.  Of course I added a pearl to the flower.  I used my Certainly Celery marker to colour the leaves.  The sentiment comes from last years level 3 hostess set!!

Corey and I also went for another hike on New Year's Eve.  It was bitterly cold again but beautifully sunny!!  It is Corey's birthday tomorrow, January 5th!!  He is such a sweetie and lots of fun!!!  I thought I would share some of the crazy photos we took!!  You will see why I love this guy!!  He makes me giggle and pretty much laugh my head off!!  When we first met I asked him how old he was, he replied "Eleventeen" and I thought to myself, "Oh good 'cause I'm only ten!!"  He turns 39 tomorrow!  But he is still "eleventeen" to me!

Thanks for stopping by! Off to bed!!!

Vive la Verve and Curtain Call Colour Challenge

Today marks the end of my two weeks off and I am back to work! I am looking forward to seeing those bright, smiley faces of the children I teach!!  Keeping true to my goals for this year, I decided to try a "new to me" challenge on the Splitcoast Stampers website.  It is called Viva la Verve and it is a sketch challenge.  I also used the pretty colours from Stacey's Stamping Stage.

I kept my card fairly simple and played up the colours.  I am trying to use only papers from my scrapbox and subbed in Real Red for the Cajun Craze and Old Olive for the Always Artichoke, I don't have those colours and I hope Stacey doesn't mind!!  I also switched up Chocolate Chip with Early Espresso.  I think I need to order some more paper, I am running low!!!  I must admit, I found the sketch to be intimidating, but I tried to keep my card clean and simple, focussing on the sentiment and the flower.

I embossed each of the Bashful Blue panels with my SU! Embossing folder called "Finial Press", it is one of my favourite folders. The flower is from the new "Fun Flowers" die and I crimped the flower with my crimper.  I used my little leaves die to create the leaves for the flower.  The Crumb Cake panel has the En Francais stamped on it.

My hubby doesn't know but this is for his birthday on Wednesday!  He is turning 39th!! Crazy!! I first met him when he was 30!! Time flies when you are having fun!!

Well off to tidy my craft room and to get ready for a big day tomorrow.

Thanks for stopping by!
Smiles,
Lesley

Inks: Real Red and Soft Suede
Tools: Big Shot, Fun Flowers Die (in new mini occasion catalogue), corner rounding punch, dimensionals

Crazy 4 Challenges-Celebrate Something

Over at Crazy 4 Challenges, they are asking for a card or project to celebrate something!!!  I received a call at midnight last night from my best friend.  She was calling long distance, from a party, to say Happy New Year!!  My best friend Jackie is not only fun, hilarious and kind, she is true-blue!  We met on our street when I was 7 years old and she was 5 years old!!  We are now 35 and 33!!  She was the maid of honour at my wedding and she has been there through thick and thin with me!! So when I saw the challenge at Crazy 4 Challenges, I created this card to celebrate my friendship Jackie to let her know how much I love her! She is like a sister to me.

This photo below is of the kids on my street when I was a kid!!  I am in the middle with my arms around the little boy sitting on my sled.  That is Mikey, Jackie's kid brother!!  Jackie has her hood up over her toque.  She is to my left.  The girl to my right is my cousin Kate, who I will be seeing today!!  My sister Kelley is sitting beside her.  The little girl in front of Jackie is Vicki, her sister.  The other two kids on the end are Laura and Nick, neighbours on our little street.

Thanks for stopping by!

Friday Mashup-Sweet on Hearts

I made this card for the current challenge over at the Friday Mashup!!  This week they are asking for a card with heart!

I recently purchased the cute Valentine Bundle that SU! is offering and made this card with it!!I went with classic Real Red and used the cute Designer Paper that came with the Valentine Bundle.  I inked up the heart image in Real Red and punched it out with the Extra Large Heart Punch.  The sentiment is also from the cute stamp bundle and I used my 3/4" circle punch to punch out the little heart flower and popped it up in the middle with a dimensional.

This card is so clean and simple, but I like that the clean lines show off the stamp set!!  I think next time I will make the rectangle a bit smaller.  Is there too much white space?

Thanks for stopping by!

Lesley
